Song related, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Everyday Shooter, and Braid

Better late than never. I really like what i played but i couldn't figure out what to add to the song, so here's what i got: the song is called wallpapers for no particular reason. I'm still getting into the mindset of writing a song a week so i guess it's okay that these first two songs are very simple.

I beat BC:R and had a lot of fun with it. I heard a lot of criticism for the last area of the game, that it was too long, that it forced you to stock up on lives, i didn't run into any of those problems. It seems like i was able to master the swing mechanic fairly well. Maybe I'll give the challenge rooms a try sometime. Also there is suppose to be some extra content coming for the PC version, maybe I'll come back to the game once that hits.

I picked up Everyday Shooter off Steam (than about 2 days later i saw it up for half price) because i had heard a lot of good things about it, that it was a great contender for the whole "games as art" argument. It didn't have a demo so i jumped into it with no idea on how it would run or play. Right off the bat i had issues with the controls (i'm playing it with my 360 controller), for one there is no analog control for your movement or your ability to aim, it's classic 8 directions. This bothered me to no end, but i quickly adapted. Another issue i had with the game was the sound, though it seems to be an issue with my computer not the game. My speakers seem to be the problem specifically, i always thought i had nice speakers for my computer, but i think they might be a little blown because the guitar in this game crackles often. I don't have this issue with anything other than this one game, i guess the guitar that was used for this game just has a odd pitch or something. Headphones seem to work fine (though that means my sub woofer is absent which sucks).

Everyday Shooter came out fairly early in the PlayStation 3s lifespan so i don't think it holds up very well today compared to whats out there now. A game like RezHD on X-box Live Arcade holds up better (for the same price) or even Geometry Wars in terms of straight up gameplay. I thought RezHD was more imaginative in the music/art genra of games, of course Rez had a bigger budget and wasent created by 1 person, but they do run at the same price so they should be compared.

These things aside i do like Everyday Shooter. I think it displays the creation of music better than Rez does and it does a better job of making each "track" feel differant than the last. The fact that each level (or track... whatever) has a different method of comboing things together, and because of this it has new methods of creating sounds, makes it a more varried game. I still have yet to beat the game though, i'm not sure if i ever will, but i'll try.

The next major release i plan to pick up is the new Stalker: Clear Sky PC game hitting on the 6th of September. Spore comes out one day after that, but i'm not sure i'll pick that game up right away since a week later Crysis: Warhead comes out (and two days later Warhammer: Online).

Lots of big releases next month it seems, which is weird, this month seemed to be full of the little downloadable releases.

Oh and Braid. People were bitching about how the online walkthrough tells them not to use a walkthrough because they will enjoy the game more. I actually was really happy about that. I was stuck on one of the last puzzels and was ready to give up so i went to look for a walkthrough and came across that page, i decided to listen to it and solved the puzzle on my own. I'm happy that i was able to finish the game without any help, but unfortinatly i was too stupid to understand what was going on in the ending. So the ending to Braid was one of the most interesting and creative endings i've ever seen in a video game, but i had to watch The 1UP show to understand what it was about (at 09:00 in the video). It didn't click with me that the princess was actually attempting to stop me when i ran the game in reverse (which was actually forward).
