It's kind of funny, one of the most influential moments of my childhood came from a comment my dad had made while i was playing Goldeneye 007 for the Nintendo 64. I'm positive that today he would not even remember what he had said or when he had said it, but it changed me and my perception of video games, especially the way the average person looks at them.
The year was 1997, i was about 8 years old at the time, and we had just got our copy of Goldeneye. I was totally blown away by the game, especially the graphics. So i had been playing through the first level, killing every enemy i could find while making my way through the facility when i came across some scientists. They were unarmed and their arms were in the air, indicating that they were harmless. I began shooting them. I shot every scientist i saw.
My dad was watching me and he told me that if i shot any more scientists he would take the game away from me.
This was... strange to me, it was the first time someone had reacted to something i was doing in a video game in a negative way. It had really hit me, what i was actually doing was killing people, and the average everyday person would not look at my activity with as much enjoyment as i was.
